Study Objective
To highlight the nutritional challenges faced in the critical care management of patients with severe COVID-19 and the potential malnutrition resulting from prolonged ICU stays.
Short Abstract
This case report illustrates the significant impact of malnutrition during prolonged ICU stays in patients with severe COVID-19. The authors present a case of a 36-year-old man with no pre-existing conditions who developed severe malnutrition and weight loss during his ICU treatment for COVID-19. The case emphasizes the importance of early nutritional intervention and ongoing monitoring in critically ill patients, especially in light of the high metabolic demands of COVID-19.
Study Design
Single-case report with nutritional assessment and clinical management in the context of ICU care for a COVID-19 patient.
Population
Single patient (36-year-old male) admitted to ICU for severe COVID-19.
Sample Size
1 patient.
Inclusion Criteria
Patient diagnosed with COVID-19, admitted to ICU requiring ventilatory support.
Exclusion Criteria
None.
Intervention/Exposure
Nutritional management through enteral feeding during a prolonged ICU stay, with nutritional requirements adjusted based on catabolic demands.
Outcome Measures
- Weight loss and malnutrition
- Protein and caloric provision during ICU stay
- ICU-related morbidity (including complications from pulmonary embolism and prolonged ventilatory support)
